First Sermon Preached: The Church as a Social Institution, 1901

Earl Clement Davis enrolled in the Harvard Divinity School in 1902. He gave at least one sermon prior to enrolling, “The Church as a Social Institution” (Congregational church, Freeport, Maine, July 21, 1901), which his note on the sermon identifies as his “first sermon preached.”
