Poetry

The following are student responses from a reflection form I created online and had the students fill out at the end of the poetry unit. These responses were answers to the question, “What is one new thing you learned about poetry?”:

poetry does not always have to be perfect

There’s way more than 3 types of poetry

One thing I learned about poetry is that there are different types of poems. For example, an Ode poem is a poem that celebrates a person, place, or thing. I didn’t know this until we did the What Do You Notice stations in entry 39.

songs can be poetry too and there are some types of poems that can be pages long

It comes in too many forms haha.

I learned that writing poetry is a new thing I enjoy.

The different varieties of poetry. (For example: free verse, haiku, etc.)

i learned different speakers performed in different ways

Reading through the student responses to these reflections clearly showed me that they met our learning goal of understanding different types of poetry, and also that they were able to gain new ways of understanding poetry in general.

Exploring Identity

Though this unit is still in progress, I am constantly seeing evidence of student growth as compared to our previous unit on poetry. For more specific examples of student growth during this unit, please see the corresponding Student Work Samples sub-section of the unit portrait.
