Committed to an integrative understanding of cultural history, I explore how ideologies, symbols and emotions affect, and are affected by, political institutions, social conflicts, and cultural differences. I am particularly interested in implementing sociological, anthropological, and philosophical approaches to history. My research focuses on three areas:

  • Mass violence and collective identity in Europe’s 20th century, with a focus on Nazi Germany and the Holocaust,
  • Body aesthetics in modern global history
  • Political culture of modern Germany, with a focus on the history of parliaments, parties, and elections in Imperial Germany.
