Rationale

An understanding of genetics and heredity is essential to progressing further in the biological sciences. The standards cover terms and relationships involving: traits, instructions, chromosomes, heredity, generations, genes, reproduction, alleles, dominance, punnett squares, base pairs, inheritance, and variation. The scope of the unit will explore these ideas at length and provide learning opportunities to interact with and apply the concepts. I will use strategies such as a word wall, starters, group discussions, and “words of the day”.

The class is comprised of students who have effective studying practices but also many who are inclined to talking and being disruptive. Additionally, there are students who are on 504’s and are ELL students. The best way we have been able to manage these challenges is through a clear classroom management plan that consists of grouping, breaks, clear instruction, and hands-on activities.
