Henry Clerval

My name is Henry Clerval and I am the son of a merchant from Geneva. I am an only child and spent a lot of time growing up in the Frankenstein household. My father is a good fellow, but he can be quite stern, not allowing me to go away to school without much persuasion. He wants me to be a trader like him, but that is not what I am called to do. I live to make this world a better place, to strive to find ways to benefit our species. I’m very interested in what is right and try my best to abide by the rules of humanity.

I have always been a big reader of romance novels and I feel as though everyone can be a hero if they follow the right path and live lives of generosity and kindness. I love nature and the beauty that radiates from the earth, and I feel blessed to live in such a naturally magnificent world.

My best friend is Victor Frankenstein, whom I have known since we were both very young. He is a great friend and I love him, but he worries me. Sometimes he is so enthralled with his studies, that he doesn’t take time for anything else. I am very afraid that he is going to fall ill because of his carelessness with his health. Also, sometimes when we talk, I feel as though he is consumed with the idea of fame. He speaks about how he wants to be known by all the future generations, and to be honest, sometimes I feel like he’d do anything to obtain the fame he speaks about. It really is none of my business though, so I’ll just continue to hope the best for him.
