“These walls were made for kids” – Jeffrey Creamer (Principle) motto

A school set in the Main South community, with a total enrollment of 1,791 students, making it the largest in the district. The community is comprised of many diverse backgrounds, such as Hispanic students representing 42% of the student demographic. Walking through the halls, you realize that the word community within South High Community School truly fits as the teachers, administrators, and students all together weave together to make a school that looks out for each other. This school was once known as the school without walls, but they’re still a school that don’t keep their doors close as they have something for everyone through the chapter 72 program such as early childhood, or culinary.
Student Enrollment data: (1,791 total students)
Looking at the school enrollment data, one can see just how diverse the demographic of the students is. While Hispanics make up 42.9% of the students, there is still so much diversity there as many are from El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and so many other places. The same can be said for the other groups such as Asian and African American. As you walk through the halls, you’ll hear chatter of all these languages as we celebrate the diversity and difference.
Dynamic Waterfall schedule:
South high implemented and tried out a new style of class schedule known as the waterfall schedule. Where the first three periods of the day would be 47 minutes long periods, followed by a two-hour period (with a 30-minute lunch during it), and finally two more 47 minutes long periods. While the last two periods of the day remained constant every day, the first four periods would rotate. The intentions behind this were to prevent chronically late students from always being late for the same class. I did have several students who benefitted from this, such as in period one, there was some who would miss the first period of the day on the daily but because of the rotating schedule, they could still excel in every one of their classes.
