Student Work Examples
Below are examples of student work that illustrate the growth in development of the learning goals over time. Each picture holds an explanation that highlights what each sample shows in this growth.

An example of an early Friday Flashback. The show of work and confidence on the assignment was pretty low and left plenty of room for improvement. The problem-solving skills still needed some development, and the content knowledge still showed more to be desired.

A poster from the Polygon Gallery Walk in my first CUP. The poster showed a lack of perseverance to put together the most accurate and presentable product. For shared responsibility, both group members received a perfect score. In hindsight, the students would be held to a higher standard of responsibility for putting forth their best effort. Part of a collaborative group and strong teammate is one who holds the group accountable for their best work.

A poster from the polygon gallery walk. This poster didn’t meet all expectations of what the posters were supposed to hold, and showed errors in the example. The poster showed room to improve in content mastery and collaborative group work.

A homework assignment early in the year. Students were showing significantly less work, which made it hard for me to check their understanding and know that they put the effort in instead of just writing down answers. The problem-solving and perseverance here leave more to be desired. The lack of a real-world connection to the work also shows that students weren’t provided the proper opportunity to apply their knowledge to the real world.
Examples of growth
The following images of student work shows the growth in the four goal categories covered here. The captions provided will describe how each sample shows growth.

To view a video of students explaining their findings in the 3D Building project, click here for one sample and here for another.

These posters from the 3D Building Project shows mastery of content. This project was about showing off findings made from discovering characteristics about shapes. These posters showed strong problem-solving perseverance and collaborative group work, where these students divided work evenly between each other and came after school to ensure that they put together the best work possible. It also shows mastery of content through accurately reporting on discovered findings.

This poster was from an assignment early on in learning proofs, showing students start to build their understanding with them. This showed their understanding of content and problem solving and perseverance skills in learning the new material.

This student sample shows strong problem-solving skills and real-world application skills in applying what they knew about arc lengths and sectors to determine the distance of each lane in a 400m sprint. This also showed a strong grasp in content knowledge by finding accurate answers.

Here’s an assignment from 8th grade where students were given two options for purchasing a service from and they had to find at which point the companies sold the same amount for the same price (the solution to the system of equations) and write about which company is better. Then they had to meet with students who did other problems and take notes on what they suggested. This shows problem solving and perseverance, connection to real-world problems, content knowledge, and collaboration all in one! Students worked together to come up with the best companies to buy from, did math in a context, worked hard at a problem in which they never saw before (substitution), and showed their understanding!

This assignment was from my second round on February 14th. The sample shows math being applied to the real world in an introduction to systems of equations. The student showed his knowledge of the subject through his writing explanations and show perseverance by answering the extension questions on the back.
