Innovative Student Writing about British Literature

People

The Critical Companion to ENG 140 @ Clark was developed by Dr. Justin P. Shaw as part of a larger curricular reimagining and specifically the redesign of ENG 140 – British Literature I at Clark University. Prof. Shaw is an Assistant Professor at Clark who researches and teaches courses in early modern British literature. His research and courses engage issues of race, emotions, politics, and disability in the literature of premodern England and modern culture. His courses include “British Literature I”, “Introduction to Shakespeare”, “Shakespeare and Race”, “Queens, Kings, and Tyrants”, “Emotions in the Renaissance”, and “Milk and Honey: Early Modern Utopias”.

The Teaching Assistant for ENG 140 in the Fall 2022 pilot of this project is Jessica Vilk.

Every essay on the site comes from the creative minds of students in ENG 140: British Literature I, starting in Fall 2022. These students include current and prospective English majors/minors as well as students studying in all disciplines – computer science, biology, philosophy, graphic design, history, and more. They bring all their interests and expertise into their writing. Students may enroll in the class at any stage at Clark. Thus, it comprises students in their 1st and 2nd years as well as more advanced students in their 3rd and 4th years. The course satisfies both the diversity and inclusion (DI) credit and historical perspective (HP) credit for Clark’s Program of Liberal Studies core curriculum.
