Stereotypes and Women of Color in the Media
Women of color have historically been portrayed in a negative light in American media, specifically in the entertainment industry. The scripting for and use of women of color in TV shows, movies and music videos often perpetuate racist stereotypes that are maintained in society. The lack of people of color in the entertainment industry as writers, producers, and actors has led to the maintenance of harmful stereotypes and the general erasure of everyday women of color. The goal of this section is to discuss the ways in which the media continues to present distorted images of women of color, call out instances of negative stereotyping, and highlight positive examples of inclusive and accurate portrayals of women of color throughout entertainment mediums.
