{"id":2,"date":"2012-05-29T15:28:01","date_gmt":"2012-05-29T15:28:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/rboatright\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2025-12-27T23:01:20","modified_gmt":"2025-12-27T23:01:20","slug":"sample-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/rboatright\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am a professor of political science at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.&nbsp; My main research interests are primary elections (particularly congressional and state legislative primaries), campaign finance, and various sorts of election reforms.&nbsp; I teach courses on American political parties, campaigns and elections, interest groups, political participation, and campaign finance.&nbsp; I&#8217;m also the co-director of Clark&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarku.edu\/academics\/undergraduate\/programs\/concentration\/law-and-society\/\">Law and Society<\/a> Concentration.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to my work at Clark, I am also the Director of Research for the <a href=\"http:\/\/nicd.arizona.edu\/\">National Institute for Civil Discourse<\/a> a part of the Arizona public university system.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve published a few books over the last three years. My most recent book (co-authored) is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/elements\/abs\/money-partisanship-and-power-in-local-politics\/51101F1A40899F28D4B350A40909BBFA\"><em>Money, Partisanship, and Power in Local Politics<\/em><\/a>, a study of who contributes to city council candidates and why the networks of donors in these ostensibly nonpartisan elections still look a lot like political parties.&nbsp; I have two books due out in 2026.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennpress.org\/9781512829730\/the-problem-with-primary-voters\/\">The Problem with Primary Voters<\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>(also co-authored) shows why low turnout in primary elections is a problem for democracy and offers solutions.&nbsp; And I&#8217;m the co-editor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.degruyterbrill.com\/document\/isbn\/9783111663661\/html?lang=en&amp;srsltid=AfmBOoqxeKwqDluG6cBQUEbfxStujnzgT1XYnV9SU9LFiI3vUqGJO0qj\"><em>Reforming Primary Elections<\/em><\/a>, a free open access volume full of the latest research on primaries, which was supported by my friends at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniteamerica.org\/\">Unite America<\/a>.&nbsp; Finally,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/reform-and-retrenchment-9780197774083?cc=us&amp;lang=en&amp;#\"><em>Reform and Retrenchment<\/em><\/a>, published in 2023, is a history of changes to primary election laws over the course of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n<p>Among other things I&#8217;ve done in the not-too-distant past are an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.umich.edu\/8083157\/deregulatory_moment\">edited volume<\/a> comparing recent changes in campaign finance laws in Western democracies, a <a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/trumping-politics-as-usual-9780190065829?cc=us&amp;lang=en&amp;\">coauthored book<\/a> with my Clark colleague Valerie Sperling on how the gender themes of the Trump and Clinton campaigns influenced House and Senate races in 2016, and a study of <a href=\"https:\/\/tupress.temple.edu\/books\/american-corruption-talk\">changes in how we have understood political corruption<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago I was the co-PI, with Vin Moscardelli, on a project funded by the Hewlett Foundation to measure the consequences of primary election dates on various primary and general election outcomes.&nbsp; Before that, I taught at Swarthmore College and I worked as a research fellow at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfinst.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Campaign Finance Institute<\/a>, as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apsanet.org\/cfp\">American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow<\/a>, and as a research associate at the American Judicature Society.&nbsp; I grew up in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolcleveland.com\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleveland, Ohio<\/a>, received my B.A from Carleton College, and received my Ph.D. from the <a href=\"http:\/\/political-science.uchicago.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Chicago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This website contains pages for my larger ongoing research projects, my vita, and syllabi for my recent classes.&nbsp;
