Cotton Mather is a particular favorite target of teasing. (Or perhaps I should say my own fascination with Mather is the target.) Every year around February 14, people start sharing those dour Puritan Valentine&#8217;s Day Cards from College Humor.<\/p>\n<p>I appreciate the gesture, but I actually don&#8217;t really find them funny because they are not really about Puritans. Rather, they are about a caricature, and caricatures of caricatures are just a kind of feedback loop. (Except for that one card about &#8220;I need you to help raise livestock and crops or surely we will starve to death come winter.&#8221; That one is amusingly accurate about the domestic arrangements necessary not to perish in seventeenth-century New England.)<\/p>\n<p>So today I am offering my instructions for creating real Puritan Valentines:<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2015\/02\/Puritan-Valentines.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-911\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2015\/02\/Puritan-Valentines.jpg\" alt=\"Puritan Valentines\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/meneuman\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2015\/02\/Puritan-Valentines.jpg 720w, https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/meneuman\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2015\/02\/Puritan-Valentines-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/meneuman\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2015\/02\/Puritan-Valentines-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And if you don&#8217;t have the patience to make your own Puritan Valentine this season, try just reciting some of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/bio\/anne-bradstreet#\" target=\"_blank\">Anne Bradstreet&#8217;s poems to her husband<\/a>.
