I’ve posted before about last fall’s LibriVox project<\/a>, in which students in my poetry class recorded an audiobook of Herman Melville’s Civil War poems,\u00a0Battle-Pieces<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Today is the 150th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg, so it seems timely to offer another sneak peak (or sneak eavesdrop, I guess) of the poem “Gettysburg”<\/a> read by Daniel Padilla.<\/p>\n

\n
O pride of the days in prime of the months<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0\u00a0Now trebled in great renown,<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
When before the ark of our holy cause<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Fell Dagon down\u2014<\/div>\n
Dagon foredoomed, who, armed and targed,<\/div>\n
Never his impious heart enlarged<\/div>\n
Beyond that hour; god walled his power,<\/div>\n
And there the last invader charged.<\/div>\n

\n
He charged, and in that charge condensed<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0His all of hate and all of fire;<\/div>\n
He sought to blast us in his scorn,<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And wither us in his ire.<\/div>\n
Before him went the shriek of shells\u2014<\/div>\n
Aerial screamings, taunts and yells;<\/div>\n
Then the three waves in flashed advance<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0Surged, but were met, and back they set:<\/div>\n
Pride was repelled by sterner pride,<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0And Right is a strong-hold yet.<\/div>\n

Before our lines it seemed a beach<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0Which wild September gales have strown<\/div>\n
With havoc on wreck, and dashed therewith<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Pale crews unknown\u2014<\/div>\n
Men, arms, and steeds. The evening sun<\/div>\n
Died on the face of each lifeless one,<\/div>\n
And died along the winding marge of fight<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And searching-parties lone.<\/div>\n
.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Sloped on the hill the mounds were green,<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0Our center held that place of graves,<\/div>\n
And some still hold it in their swoon,<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0And over these a glory waves.<\/div>\n
The warrior-monument, crashed in fight,<\/sup><\/div>\n
Shall soar transfigured in loftier light,<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0A meaning ampler bear;<\/div>\n
Soldier and priest with hymn and prayer<\/div>\n
Have laid the stone, and every bone<\/div>\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Shall rest in honor there.<\/div>\n
