Our class of 13 students was a family. During the first week of school, we took pictures of each student and put up a sign that said “Our First Grade Family” and that is how it felt. We kept the pictures up all year. When you spend 6 hour days with your students every day, they begin to feel like your family. All families have expectations, just like our classroom has.
The class is made up of many different cultures and backgrounds that makes our classroom family so special. We have students from Ghana, Spain, Brazil, Republic of the Congo, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, India, and more. Our students are so proud of where they are from, and so are we. In our class, we commonly talk about our cultures and languages that we speak.
Our “golden rule”
in our classroom is that we treat others the way that we want to be treated. We constantly refer back to our golden rule, and we make sure that we are being kind to one another. Each day, one student gets to be the “super kid” in our classroom for the day. The super kid has many responsibilities during the day, and they also get to lead the morning meeting. During this time, the super kid gets to share something and take questions. This is a special time for our students to get to know each other, and show that we care about one another. It is a special time every morning to have a quick check-in.
Our classroom family is an amazing and special family!
