{"id":693,"date":"2021-12-06T12:20:42","date_gmt":"2021-12-06T17:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat19-template\/?page_id=693"},"modified":"2022-05-04T21:48:47","modified_gmt":"2022-05-05T01:48:47","slug":"learning-activities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat22-owinters\/learning-teaching-portraits\/learning-activities\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning Activities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Learning Activity 1- Agree\/Disagree<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the very first day of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Romeo and Juliet <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">unit and my takeover, I ran an anticipatory activity where I projected statements related to love and relationships that were reminiscent of dynamics in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Romeo and Juliet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> such as \u201cIf my parents didn\u2019t like my partner, I would break up with them.\u201d Students indicated whether they agreed or disagreed by moving to the corresponding side of the room. In some classes the conversations were very civil while in others they teetered on a full out debate, but overall kids had a lot of fun and by the end of the activity most could guess that we would be starting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Romeo and Juliet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. After the activity, students had 15- 20 minutes to choose a statement they felt strongly about and write a paragraph either defending or refuting it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Learning Activity 2- Glee Project<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A major goal of this unit was for students to improve their ability to pick quotes that would support claims they made and then incorporate evidence into analysis effectively. For this activity, I was inspired by my students\u2019 love for the TV show <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Glee<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and I asked the question, \u201cIf there was a Glee episode about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Romeo and Juliet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, what song would each character sing?\u201d Students picked a song for 4 characters of their choosing, and wrote 2-3 sentences explaining why.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Learning Activity 3- Character Autopsy<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-805 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/729\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-9.47.19-PM-300x209.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat22-owinters\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/729\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-9.47.19-PM-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat22-owinters\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/729\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-9.47.19-PM-1024x714.png 1024w, https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat22-owinters\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/729\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-9.47.19-PM-768x535.png 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat22-owinters\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/729\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-9.47.19-PM-1536x1071.png 1536w, https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat22-owinters\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/729\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-9.47.19-PM.png 1690w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students drew a cha<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">racter from the play- either Romeo, Juliet, Friar Laurence, Lady Capulet, Capulet, the Nurse or Montague to keep with the theme of mentors and role models. There <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">were prompts for many body parts- head, feet, torso, and hands- to draw objects that represented multiple aspects of the subject\u2019s characteriza<\/span>tion. Along with the drawing, students wrote a short paragraph for each additional symbol that explained how they picked it using evidence from the text.<\/p>\n<p><b>Learning Activity 4- Textual Evidence Workshop&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To practice using evidence from the text successfully, students completed an assignment where they had to revise paragraphs that attempted to answer questions about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Romeo and Juliet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Students were given a worksheet f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">eaturing 3 paragraphs riddled with mistakes such as not using complete sentences, using \u201cI think,\u201d providing a quote as an answer without explaining it, etc. I modeled the revision of the first paragraph while students followed along on their worksheets. We completed the second paragraph as a class, and students worked in pairs to complete the last paragraph.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Learning Activity 5- Escape Room Review<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-804 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/729\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-9.45.28-PM-300x271.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat22-owinters\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/729\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-9.45.28-PM-300x271.png 300w, https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat22-owinters\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/729\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-9.45.28-PM-1024x924.png 1024w, https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat22-owinters\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/729\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-9.45.28-PM-768x693.png 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat22-owinters\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/729\/2022\/05\/Screen-Shot-2022-05-04-at-9.45.28-PM.png 1070w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Romeo and Juliet <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">test, we used the common room to play a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">R&amp;J<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> themed \u201cescape room.\u201d Students traveled between 4 stations and raced to complete tasks such as matching quotes to characters, putting plot events in order, ident<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ifying figurative language examples and more.
