Romeo and Juliet Unit

  1. SWBAT read and understand Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet
  2. SWBAT make claims about characters from R&J and their relationships and support them using evidence from the text. 
  3. SWBAT compare and contrast characters using evidence from the text.
  4. SWBAT critique the relationship dynamics in R&J using evidence from the text. 
  5. SWBAT understand the importance of healthy relationships with mentors and role models.

Poetry and The Poet X Unit

  1. SWBAT identify the tone and mood of a poem and explain using evidence from the text
  2. SWBAT identify and explain poetic devices such as metaphor, simile, rhyme, alliteration, symbolism and hyperbole in poetry
  3. SWBAT write poetry that is intentional with its tone and mood and correctly uses multiple forms of poetic devices that they have learned. 
  4. SWBAT identify a character’s intersecting identities and understand how they impact that character’s decisions. 
  5. SWBAT build their discussion skills by posing questions and building off of each other’s responses in student led discourse without teacher intervention. 

Understanding Adolescence Unit

  1. SWBAT understand how adolescence has been socially constructed over time. 
  2. SWBAT identify stereotypes about adolescence and how they are enforced in literature, film/television and current events.
  3. SWBAT draw connections between various media such as those listed above.
  4. SWBAT read online news articles with a critical lens. 
  5. SWBAT see themselves as complex individuals separate from the generalizations commonly assigned to adolescents.
