Science and Technology Engineering Standards
2.K-2-ETS1-3: Analyze data from tests of two objects designed to solve the same design problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each object performs.
This standard was addressed in Lesson 3 where students got to test out different materials and ways of folding paper to determine which is the most effective for the project and to use in their final designs.
English Language Arts and Literacy Standards
2.W.7: Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g. read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations).
Students had to record their observations of tests as well as use their packets as science journals.
2.W.8: Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
Students used their tests as experiences to form ideas around improvements for their final model.
2.W.10: Write routinely for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.
Students wrote, drew, and labelled in their packets each day of the unit.
2.SL.1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
Students worked with one partner throughout the entire project. They had to collaborate in order to design and create models and test those models.
2.SL.4: Tell a story, recount an experience, or explain how to solve a mathematical problem with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences and using appropriate vocabulary.
Students used this standard when they explain their thinking in a metacognitive way to decide what steps to take in their design process.
2.SL.6: Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification.
Students again had to communicate clearly with one another in their partnerships to be successful.
2.L.1:Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking; retain and further develop language skills learned in previous grades.
Students had to write and communicate every day for every step in the EDP. They used English to communicate with each other and with teachers.
2.L.2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
In their reflections and other writings, students wrote in full sentences using appropriate conventions.
2.L.3: Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.
Students were expected to write, speak, listen, and read each day in every lesson.
2.L.6: Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, activities in the grade 2 curriculum, reading and being read to, and responding to texts, including using adjectives and adverbs to describe.
Students were expected to include relevant new vocabulary such as engineers, engineering, models, designs, materials, etc. to describe their bridges and experiences.
