Please click on the hyperlinked PDFs to read in more detail about them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/Culture_-LAP-1.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 1: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is culture? <\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activity \/\/\/&nbsp;<\/strong>We will look at a map of Worcester in the \u201cstreet\u201d mode on Google docs so students, as students start to notice and wonder about the map, gathering evidence of multiple cultures on the streets of Worcester (restaurants, stores, street names, types of clothing, etc.)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We will also look at various videos of dances and cooking in small groups to introduce this idea of what culture is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Goals \/\/\/<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT* record their noticings and wonderings of the map.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT understand that Worcester is very culturally <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rich<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. (Rich has 2 meanings). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will begin to develop their understanding what culture is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/Culture_-LAP-2-.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 2:&nbsp;<\/strong>What are our own cultures?&nbsp;<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activity \/\/\/&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will be researching their own cultural backgrounds on websites I have chosen that will answer many basic aspects about culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Goals \/\/\/<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT use the headings of a web page to navigate and answer their questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT raise their hands if they have a vocabulary question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT discover more of their own cultural background through a website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/Culture_-LAP-3-continuing-research.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 3: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Continuing research&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activity:&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will continue researching their cultures, but now through the online platform, Google Classroom. Through Google Classroom students can be more autonomous in their research, as well as get used to a new tool our classroom will use in the future.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Goals \/\/\/<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT independently access Google Classroom (after a detailed walk through, of course).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT use the headings of a web page to navigate and answer their questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT know whether working independently or in a pair is a better choice for them and their focus. <\/span><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/Culture_-LAP-4-William-guest-speaker-2.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 4: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who in our community can teach us about culture? (Guest visit from William Polanco)<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activity: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Father to one of my students, William Polanco will come in and teach us about the Puerto Rican flag, as well as his experience with his culture.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Goals \/\/\/&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT ask questions that make sense grammatically and in the context of our culture unit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT ask questions of Mr. Polanco that show they are listening to their peers (i.e. not repeating questions). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT show with their bodies they are listening to the speaker (e.g. sitting safely, facing the speaker, eyes on the speaker). <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/Culture_-LAP-5-Flag-connections-.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 5: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What can we learn about culture from our flags? <\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activity \/\/\/ <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a class, we will examine the similarities we notice between different country\u2019s flags and determine what that could imply to understand &nbsp;more about culture. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT make connections from our previous speaker\u2019s insight on flags and all of the flags we are examining.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">understand that we learn culture through our family from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">generation <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">generation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/Culture_-LAP-6-with-Afriany.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 6: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who in our community can teach us about culture? Guest visit from Afriany Ventura<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activity: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We will have guest visitor, Afriany Ventura, teach us to make a food from her culture of the Dominican Republic, empanadas.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">SWBAT ask questions related to culture and particular to Afriany.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">SWBAT follow oral instructions about cooking, and ask questions as needed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">SWBAT show respect for a guest by following normal classroom rules of listening to the speaker, not talking over one another, and raising their hand.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Students will see how human and personal culture is, and that everyone has their own thoughts about their culture.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/Culture_-LAP-7-Cinderella-Stories-.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 7: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What can literature of a familiar fairytale teach us about culture? <\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activity \/\/\/ <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will read different versions of the same popular fairytale, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cinderella<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, to better understand different cultures from around the world.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Goals \/\/\/<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT apply their understanding of culture to the story to explain what they notice about the culture of the country they\u2019re reading a fairytale from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT pull out specific examples from the text to show their understanding of culture as it relates to the fairytale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT understand the meaning of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">folktale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as it relates to this fairytale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will see the connection between the IRA folktales we\u2019ve been reading from different countries and these different versions of Cinderella.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT compare and contrast their version of Cinderella to the story we\u2019re told in this country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/Culture_-LAP-8-Interviews-2.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 8: <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What have you learned about culture and how can you share it with your peers? <\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activity \/\/\/&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will be paired off to write interview questions for each other, plan an interview, and record their interview on Flipgrid, and educational video recording website.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Goals \/\/\/&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT work as a team with their partner (e.g. sharing the Chrome book, deciding on a plan that feels both parties, and staying on task).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT create interview questions that are about culture and also ask their partner of their opinions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT use FlipGrid appropriately (e.g. staying on the website, following the directions I\u2019ve given, not fighting with their partner over screen time).<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>*SWBAT = Student will be able to<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Below is a brief descriptions of the lessons in this unit.
