What is an engineer?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/Engineering_-LAP-2-Dr.-Dan.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 2: Why are structures built the way they are?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activity and Assessment \/\/\/&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Guest teacher, Dr. Dan Levy (my dad!) comes into design a clinic based on the needs of humans.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will draw a clinic using specific materials and label things based on their purpose.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students are assessed based on their participation, ability to work in a group, and what they produce as a team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus \/\/\/ <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How are spaces designed based on their intended purpose? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/LAP-3_-Plan-and-Sketch-.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 3: Planning phase &nbsp;<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activity and Assessment \/\/\/&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students work in groups to sketch and plan their ideas based on their observations of the materials at hand.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students are assessed based on their ability to work in a group as well as complete their group worksheets of <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus \/\/\/ <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Engineers Sketch and Plan their ideas <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/LAP-4_-Building-and-trial-1-.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 4: Engineers are teamworkers and need to compromise sometimes&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activity and Assessment \/\/\/&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will read <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rosie Revere Engineer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as well as have a conversation around <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">compromising<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In groups students will also start to build!&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students are assessed based on their participation in the morning\u2019s conversations, and their applications in the afternoon. Students will also self-reflect in an exit slip based on their ability to listen, compromise, and create a boat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus \/\/\/&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Engineers make mistakes sometimes!&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Start building <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/LAP-5_-Replanning-and-Rebuilding-.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 5: What materials make the most sense for your structure? Keep building!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Activity and Assessment \/\/\/&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will test their designs and write about how they can be improved! They will complete a Materials Itinerary to write down their reasoning for choosing certain materials.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students are assessed based on their writing and replanning in their journals, as well as identifying what the issue or place of improvement is in their plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus \/\/\/ <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How can our design be improved? What sort of materials make the most sense for making improvements? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/596\/2019\/05\/LAP-6_-wrap-up-lesson.pdf\"><strong>Lesson 6: Assessment&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Activity and Assessment \/\/\/&nbsp;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We gather as a class to discuss what happened in this experiment and what conclusions we can draw based on our experiences. We play a Divide and Slide game to review and debrief our experiment.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students are assessed based on their participation in the activities and discussion, as well as their final self reflection in their journals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus \/\/\/ <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What did we discover about what makes a boat able to float and hold weight? <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Below you will find a brief description of the lessons in this unit.
