{"id":255,"date":"2018-11-12T12:31:51","date_gmt":"2018-11-12T17:31:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/eportfolio-sample\/?page_id=255"},"modified":"2019-05-05T13:16:07","modified_gmt":"2019-05-05T17:16:07","slug":"understanding-goals","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat19-slevy\/learning-teaching-portraits\/portrait-ii-overview\/understanding-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The essential questions listed below guide our thinking throughout the entire unit and led to more specific questioning.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is an engineer?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is the design cycle?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why are certain materials good for certain jobs?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What does it mean to work in a group?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>The more specific learning goals are divided into the following three sections:<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><em><b>The challenge \/ content &#8211; based goals&nbsp;<\/b><\/em><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT* create two models of boats in a team.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT apply their understanding of a design cycle to their own challenge.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT make connections between and across lessons (ex. Dr. Dan Levy coming in, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rosie Revere Engineer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and our overarching project of creating the boat).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT write independently and collaboratively in a lab report style and informal exit-slip style.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT reflect through brief exit slips on independent behavior and group behavior.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><em><strong>Material knowledge\/science vocabulary acquisition<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT identifying the various purposes of different recycled materials.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will have a variety of adjectives to describe the quality of a material.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><em><b>Group work<\/b><\/em><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT compromise in a group when needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SWBAT identify what supportive group work looks like.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>*SWBAT = Students will be able to<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The essential questions listed below guide our thinking throughout the entire unit and led to more specific questioning.
