For this unit, I used a lot of my own thinking to design a curriculum that would be most engaging and relevant for my students. I invited in my friend Jenny to talk with us about her work with immigrants on the border and the brave work she does as a citizen of this country. She was a main point of reference for several conversations after our phone call with her.

Through a search on TeachersPayTeachers, I was inspired to create a certificate system for my observations of good citizens in the classroom. This was a routine for the duration of our unit almost daily and was helpful for students to enact their ideas of what a good citizen is into reality.
