In this unit, we asked ourselves, “What makes some one a good cicitzen?” This overarching question lead us down a path of inquiry which we discovered through class read-alouds, community mapping, and an interview. Although I believe most people have some innate draw to understanding other humans, and therefore show compassion toward them, I also am of the belief that these social skills and structures need to be taught explicitly. We learned specific vocabulary to describe what we found to be “good citizens.” Just like other academic standards, students can practice the skills of showing kindness, respect, helpfulness, and standing up for their community from an early age.
