Lesson one: Who is an immigrant?
Formative
-Students will participate in turn and talks to help one another comprehend aspects of the read aloud “Coming to America”.
-Students will record their questions and attach them to the classroom question board to refer back to through out the unit.
Summative
-Students will electronically respond to the question, “Who is an immigrant?”.
Lesson two: Ellis Island Exploration
Formative
-Students will complete an empathy journal in which students will record the feelings an immigrant passing through Ellis Island and what may have cause such feelings.
Summative
-Students will complete a letter, written from the perspective of an immigrant who has just completed processing on Ellis Island.
Lesson three: Ellis Island Simulation
Formative
-Students will be provided with a “passport” full of directions, but more importantly a variety of small activities pertaining to Ellis Island.
Summative
-Students will be asked to complete their simulation with a letter from the perspective of the identity they were provided for the simulation.
Lesson four: No Question Left Unturned
Formative
-As a class we will discuss questions the students have added to the questions board over the past three lessons. I will asses them based on how well the students show their inferences based on previous knowledge in their answers.
Summative
-Independently students will answer (in writing) peer questions which have been answered in previously lessons since the question was added to the questions board.
Lesson five: Immigrant Interview
Formative
-Students will show understanding of how to conduct an interview by suggesting focused and informative interview questions.
Summative
-Students will complete an interview, with proper interview shorthand and applicable details.
Lesson six: Clips Presentations
Formative
-Students will transfer the information which they collected through their interview to a set of slides and find images to support their information.
Summative
-Students will complete a clips presentation containing the information the students gained from their interview.
-Students will include a clip about the transformation of the immigration over time.
