Unit Wide Learning Goals
Essential question: How do you find an angle measure?
- How do you use a given angle measure to find the measure of a different angle?
- How do you use a protractor?
- How can using geometry thinking improve our math talk and success?
-

LAP 1: Lines, Rays, and Angles
- SWBAT identify examples of each vocabulary word.
- SWBAT identify specific angles (angle PQT vs. angle IWH).
- SWBAT begin explaining how fractions and angle measure relate.
Activity:
During this lesson students were introduced to new vocabulary. From here we made connections to the everyday world and used our arms and hands to represent the different vocabulary words as a way to remember them. From here the students independently practiced practiced their vocabulary using IXL.
LAP Two: Understanding Angles
- SWBAT follow directions in the creation of our angle example.
- SWBAT find examples of the vocabulary in their environment.
- SWBAT apply knowledge practiced in hands on activity to complete a quick check.
Activity:
During the first day of this lesson students and I did a hands on exploration with discussion in between steps and guiding our next steps. During the second day the students were asked to find examples of each type of angle and with their IPads take pictures to insert into the slides. Following this students were given the opportunity to practice independently.
Student Work Sample:
LAP Three: Measure and Draw Angles
- SWBAT use a protractor to accurately find an angle measure.
- SWBAT draw a picture/diagram to solve a word problem.
- SWBAT utilize inferencing, supported by vocabulary to show reasoning in problem solving.
Activity:
During this lesson students were introduced to the use of a protractor through a word problem. They were given the opportunity to practice with a hands on protractor and with a digital protractor. In addition to this the students were given the opportunity to practice through a game called “Rocket Angles“.
Student Work Sample:
LAP Four: Add and Subtract Angles
- SWBAT complete standard and word problems.
- SWBAT explain how they came to their answer.
- SWBAT complete problems individually and as a group.
Activity:
During this lesson students were able to spend time on “Alien Angles” which is another math game as a type of worm up. Next, in small groups we worked through practice problems together. Following this students were asked to work on an “Adaptive Practice” assignment and on IXL to continue independent practice.
LAP Five: Solving Problems Using Appropriate Tools
- SWBAT identify and use the appropriate tool for the specific problem.
- SWBAT accurately complete their assigned homework problems.
- SWBAT independently choose and accurately complete IXL problems.
Activity:
During this lesson students worked to apply their knowledge of adding and subtracting angles to word problems supported by diagrams. Following this students practiced on IXL and were assigned a homework review.
LAP Six : Review/Test
- SWBAT explain their answers when asked by a teacher.
- SWBAT get right to work and complete expected workload at each station.
- SWBAT complete and accurately answer each test question.
Activity: Review
During the review students were broken up into small groups and proceeded through stations, framed by a themed alien review (These slides can be found here under the column “Angles, Lines, and Rays: Slides”.) The students worked through word problems with the support of a teacher and then would transition to practicing their skills through games.
Activity: Test
