Students will practice creating a collage using construction paper by referencing one of the diptych drawings they created from magazines. Then they will find an image they want to use for their final project, sketch the image, and recreate it as a construction paper collage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Learning Goal(s)<\/strong>:<\/strong> Describe what specifically students will <\/span>know<\/i><\/b> and <\/span>be able to do<\/i><\/b> after the experience of this class.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students will be able to transform a reference image into simple geometric shapes, abstracting the image. They will demonstrate a sense of space in the first image of their diptych that relies on their knowledge of shape and color. They will know how to manipulate construction paper to build their collage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rationale<\/strong>:<\/strong> Explain how the content and learning goal(s) relate to your Curriculum Unit Plan learning goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students will be able to further their skills in identifying simple geometric shapes in 3D objects. They were introduced to the concept of drawing 3D objects as simple geometric shapes earlier in the year and now will be able to apply that knowledge to creating collages. They will also continue to develop their skills in creating composition by working with various types of collages.<\/span><\/p>\n

Assessment<\/strong>:<\/strong> Describe <\/span>how<\/i><\/b> you and your students will know they have reached your learning goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students will create a diptych demonstrating the collage method that alters a reference photo in two ways (using construction paper for color and shape, then using magazine cut outs for texture). Their collages will utilize various geometric shapes for their objects and as many textures as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Personalization and equity<\/strong>:<\/strong> Describe how you will provide for individual student strengths and needs. \u00a0\u00a0How will you and your lesson consider the needs of each student and scaffold learning? How specifically will ELL students and students with learning disabilities gain access and be supported?<\/span><\/p>\n

I will show a pre-made example of the practice collage using an image I used to model the drawing practice earlier in the week. The visual aid and repetition of the same image will allow students to review how to identify simple geometric shapes in 3D objects. I will also walk around the classroom to monitor student progress and have individual conversations to provide feedback for struggling students, including breaking down the assignment into smaller, more manageable tasks. At any point, I will allow extra time to complete each step for those students who need it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Activity description and agenda:\u00a0<\/strong>Describe the activities that will help your students understand the content of your class lesson by creating an agenda with time frames for your class. \u00a0Be prepared to explain why you think each activity will help students on the path toward understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n

Day 1: I will present the prototype I made of the construction paper collage, using the same example image I drew earlier in the week. Students will pick one of the diptychs they drew in the past couple days or pick a new image from a magazine, and recreate it using construction paper.<\/span><\/p>\n

Day 2: Students will continue working on their practice collage. When they have finished it, they will find an image to use for their final project. Students who are ready can begin sketching the outlines of their final image.<\/span><\/p>\n

Day 3: Students will start applying construction paper to the sketch of their final image.<\/span><\/p>\n

Day 4-8: Students will continue working on their construction paper collage.<\/span><\/p>\n

What particular challenges<\/strong>, in terms of student learning or implementing planned activity, do you anticipate and how will you address them?<\/span><\/p>\n

Students may choose a final image that is too simple to recreate an interesting construction paper collage. I will encourage students to challenge themselves and find a complex image. I will help students find an appropriately complex image based off suggestions they have for a theme or type of image. I also anticipate that students may find it difficult to transition from recreating their practice diptychs with construction paper (which is mostly large, simplified shapes) and recreating their final image with construction paper (which I expect to have much more detail). I will have a work-in-progress prototype for students to reference as they create their final construction paper collage. I will remind students of the kind of detail and complexity I am looking for in their collages.<\/span><\/p>\n

2.13 Use color, line, texture, shape, and form in 2D and 3D work and identify the use of these elements in the compositions of others.\u00a0<\/span>Examples include: line as edge treatment and in patterns; color temperature, mass and volume as functions of color, size, perspective; negative space; visual and surface textures.<\/span><\/i>
