Portrait II – Collage Diptychs

As part of the 2D design quarter, I created a collage unit that focused on the concept of diptychs. Diptychs are any two images (i.e., photographs, paintings, drawings, etc.) that when shown together tell some kind of story. The images can be displayed as separate images next to each other or on top of each other, or they can also be displayed as two halves of one image. The story can be as simple and obviously related as an image of a closed box and an image of an open box. It can also be as complicated and thoughtfully related as an image of a sad little boy and an image of a distant boat on the horizon. While diptychs were the conceptual focus of this unit, the technical skill focus was on teaching my students how to create collages using construction paper to identify shapes and magazine paper to identify texture in their chosen images. I realize now that my plan had included a lot of new knowledge that may have been overwhelming for students to comprehend. I had hoped that the way I broke down the unit, the way I presented each lesson, would allow students to slowly but surely interact with all those concepts over a longer period of time as this was my longest unit yet.

The following pages reveal my lessons for this collage diptych unit. Within these pages you will find more information on the understanding goals, rationale, performance assessments, personalization, and curriculum standards for each lesson.
