While originally modeled after Lucy Calkin’s writer’s workshop, I quickly discovered almost all of the students in my class, including most of my English Language learners needed extra support. I redesigned the unit so each student worked with a graphic organizer to help them address the different text features, and organize their ideas. Doing this helped my students successfully write informational books on diverse topics, incorporating headings, drawings and labels, introductions and conclusions. Their success helped me learn how important it can be to think about your students and how they learn, and that making adjustments mid-unit can still lead to powerful learning.

To read more about my understanding goals click here

To read more about my rationale click here

To read more about the curriculum standards click here

To read more about my pedagogy click here

To read more about my learning activities click here

To read more about my performance assessments click here

To see student work samples click here

To see my references click here

How do writers write informational texts?
