Science Unit: Sound

Students will be discovering what causes sound, and why sound occurs, through hands on science activities. Students will focus on the question “How does a hummingbird make sound?” Students will discover that sound makes things move, or vibrate. Students will then understand what a vibration is by watching vibrations and making musical instruments. Students will then think about sound waves, and experiment with sound traveling through solids and the air. Students will come to understand that sound travels best through solids. The unit will be guided by hands on learning and the ways of knowing philosophy of students acting as scientists. Students will learn through authentic and meaningful activities.

  • What causes sound?
  • What is a vibration?
  • Does sound move better through solids or air?
