Room 215 is a wonderfully positive and enthusiastic classroom, with 26 curious learners who inspire me each and every day. Visitors who walk into our classroom are always impressed by my students’ eagerness to learn about who they are, and teach them about our little world. My students are a highly inquisitive bunch, constantly asking questions and making connections with their own lives. Teaching in Room 215 has been an absolute joy, and I could not imagine a more tenacious group of young learners.
Room 215 is an inclusion classroom, made up of unique learners, all with diverse needs. Our classroom population of 26 students consists of 16 English Language Learners, and 12 who receive special education services. My mentor Mrs. Lloyd and I work hard to support their needs, and make the curriculum accessible to all of our students, providing differentiation whenever we can.
To help our students succeed we have covered the classroom walls with student work and resources. Whether it is academic or behavioral, we are continuously reinforcing our expectations by referring to these posters, and teaching students to take advantage of everything around them. Our walls are brightly colored and filled with student work, so students can feel comfortable and proud of the work they have done. This is their space!
Our diverse community of learners has empowered students to always look out for one another, stay respectful towards each other’s differences, and be supportive helpers for their friends. From saying goodbye to old friends, welcoming new students, listening to each other, and helping bridge gaps in understanding, it is evident that our classroom is a strong and vibrant community, where everyone belongs. I am amazed by their sense of compassion and responsibility to help everyone in our room succeed.
