Emmalina chose to write about cats. Her work below shows excellent diagrams with labels, and a great example of writing everything you know about a topic. “What do cats look like? Cats have fur eyes and ears and whiskers and a nose cat have incredible eyes that help them see in the dark! Cat a yummy: Cats eat cat food cats eat fish cats drink milk cats eat rats people’s food and mice. Cat toys: Cats play with yarn cat play with mice and then…Cat babies: Have babies! Which is the best part of being a CAT!”
Emmalina was ready to write about her own topic, and chose spring. “How do they celebrate? What they do to celebrate is they might plant flowers! What can you do? What you can do in spring is pick flowers. Flowers! There are many flowers I love flowers they grow in spring! Animals are born! In the spring animals are born like: birds and rabbits!”
Andy was one of many writers who really struggled organizing his information. This writing was done before I introduced the graphic organizer. “Dinosaur can roar. Them is mad also them is extinct. Them have sharp teeth. Them for…Dinosaur is awesome…”
Andy then chose to write about sharks when using the graphic organizer. “What do they eat? Them eat fish. Also sea otters. Also humans.” He then transferred his text onto new pages. He did a great job adding a heading at the top and including the information from his organizer when transferring text.
When Andy could choose his own writing subject he chose Legos. Andy’s last writing sample shows his growth throughout the unit. His last piece of work is organized well with appropriate pictures and headings. “Building: You can build with legos. You can build houses you can build planes you can build cars. Playing: You can play my brother play with you and your sister and and dad. Colors: Them are different colors. Them are green them are white them are pink them are lots of colors. Stores: Them are in the stores. They at the toy… and at Walmart and at Target.”
Elijah struggled a lot with his writing and stamina. Writing a complete informational text was a big challenge for him, and the organizer helped him focus on answering one question at a time.”What do they look like? They look like a whale. They are…Where do they live? They live in the water. What do they eat? They eat fish. What do they do? They do stuff. They take a test bite.”
