What are informational texts and what are their key components?
This unit taught students about writing informational texts about animals. While originally modeled after Lucy Calkin’s writer’s workshop, I quickly discovered almost all of the students in my class, including most of my English Language learners needed extra support. I redesigned the unit so each student worked with a graphic organizer to help them address the different text features, and organize their ideas. Doing this helped my students successfully write informational books on diverse topics, incorporating headings, drawings and labels, introductions and conclusions. Their success helped me learn how important it can be to think about your students and how they learn, and that making adjustments mid-unit can still lead to powerful learning.
