I want my students to begin to learn about the various types of genres in english literature, so they can begin to think about which types of books they enjoy. By allowing students to not only learn about realistic fiction, but also create their own stories, I hope to encourage students to make deeper connections with the genre. During the unit students will also focus on making predictions, allowing them to get involved with their own learning, and apply their knowledge about realistic fiction.
Students’ backgrounds and readiness:
To make the unit more engaging I will begin by talking about the texts we have read as a whole class, and ask students to sort them into realistic and nonrealistic stories. Throughout each lesson I will incorporate engaging literature and build on our shared texts. I will also ask students to create their characters, plots, and settings as we learn about each literary aspect. Doing so allows students to incorporate their own interests and creative writing ideas while they make their own stories.
