Rationale

It is important that my students can write both fiction and non-fiction. In this unit I want them to understand the difference between writing a fictional story and an informational book. This is an important part of becoming familiar with the various genres.

I also want my students to know about the writing process, and the different parts of a text. They should know how to open informational texts and understand what a table of contents is, how to read a diagram, or use headings to help them understand. I hope that they will be able to connect what they learned from writing fiction to their non-fiction ELA unit.

Lastly, to achieve this standard, students will be using a graphic organizer. This is a great skill to have when writing, and will teach students to outline their thinking before beginning. Doing this will help them replicate the writing process and produce organized multiple page booklets.
