4A.1:          Reflective Practice

Reflection has been a daily part of my teaching practice from the beginning. After almost every period I teach, I take a few minutes to journal about the experience of that class. Writing my thoughts down helps me process them and it also ensures that I don’t forget them! Having a written day-by-day record of my teaching experience has proven fascinating to look back on and also helps me recognize patterns of successes and struggles. Fortunately, my mentor teacher was as committed to reflection as I was and took the time to meet with me every day during fifth period to process my reflections, give me suggestions and encouragement, and help me plan. This daily routine of reflection contributed immensely to my growth as a teacher, for it allowed me to better understand myself and my students.
