When creating this unit, I adapted the “You Be the Teacher” project from a similar project that Kyle Pahigian did with her tenth grade students a few years ago. In addition, I came up with the “What’s the Rule?” exponent discovery sheets through conversations with Kate Shepard and Kyle. For the scientific notation unit, much of my inspiration and real-world contexts came from an eighth grade unit created by Jessica Griffin, a former graduate student at the College of Brockport, that I found online. Her unit was designed to address the New York state common core and learning standards, which were similar to those of Massachusetts.
