I decided to host this first round during a short proofreading unit, which immediately followed two units where we wrote thesis essays. Students worked with their &#8220;Next Steps in Your Writing&#8221; sections of their latest graded essays to see what they personally could\u00a0improve upon. Then, they constructed their own, individual proofreading guides to be used the remainder of the year. I called these &#8220;focused proofreading guides.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>My round (<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/416\/2016\/01\/Porcella-Round-Sheet-1.pdf\" rel=\"\">Porcella Round Sheet #1<\/a>) involved students teaching each other how to use certain grammar terminology, which evolved from students individually researching their own errors in their writing&#8230;with some initial help from me to locate the errors!<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the best way to learn is to teach&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/416\/2016\/01\/IMG_6389.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-902\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-902 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/416\/2016\/01\/IMG_6389-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6389\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat16-nporcella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/416\/2016\/01\/IMG_6389-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat16-nporcella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/416\/2016\/01\/IMG_6389-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat16-nporcella\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/416\/2016\/01\/IMG_6389-113x150.jpg 113w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Round 2 (January 2016)<\/h1>\n<p>I also held my\u00a0second round of the year with the freshmen group. This was the first round I filmed, and the whole round can be seen in the <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/mat16-nporcella\/learning-teaching-portraits\/portrait-ii-overview\/video-and-commentary\/\"><em>You Don&#8217;t Know Me<\/em> Portraits<\/a>\u00a0section.<\/p>\n<p>Here, students took on the roles of characters in the book\u00a0<em>You Don&#8217;t Know Me<\/em> in order to build empathy and figure out character motivations. They really enjoyed the chance to try something new, and students excelled at acting and being good audience members. (<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/416\/2016\/01\/Porcella-Round-Sheet-2.pdf\" rel=\"\">Porcella Round Sheet #2<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h1>Round 3 (April\u00a02016)<\/h1>\n<p>The final round of my M.A.T. year was spent with the juniors. I was thrilled to have my juniors show off their learning about drama through performance with the\u00a0<em>A Streetcar Named Desire<\/em> unit. The juniors put on a spectacular show and had a phenomenal conversation about key themes, characters, and symbols.
