Period 3 – Spanish 3 “College Level”
My newest class, a more quiet group that has a extremely diverse needs.
Many students are on 504’s and IEP’s, and the Spanish varies from Native Speakers
to students who hardly know any Spanish. My goal is to challenge all of these students
and meaningfully scaffold for the students that are behind so they can be engaged. This
class has challenged me to put in place more routines and a more rigid grading heuristic
to ensure student engagement.
Period 4- English Language Learners “Level 1”
My ELL class is relatively small -about 12 students- but this allows for a good deal of
individualized attention. This number may change, as every month there seems to be a
new arrival with near “zero English”. My goals for these students is to a) Give them the
initial tools they need to competently navigate their way in a new country. b) Begin
developing academic literacy, that they will carry for the rest of their lives.
Period 6- Spanish 5 “Honors Level”
This was the first class I took over, they are an interesting mix of students ranging from
high-acheiving “Goddard Scholars”, to Native Speakers who are not performing as well
academically in other disciplines. The students are open to new experiences, and willing to
be challenged academically. This has pushed me to develop more thought provoking
lessons where the language is taught through the content, and both are seen as mutually
reinforcing.
Period 7- Spanish 3 “College Level”
A small class due to several students transferring out of the district. This class is willing to
participate, but presents similar challenges to those of period 3, there is a very broad
spectrum of language development that makes accommodation more challenging. My
goal with these students is similar, to develop foundational elements of language, as well
as develop routines that will help promote academic literacy and challenge them to look at
Spanish in a different light.
