Family and Community Engagement

Family and Community Engagement

I always tried to show the relevance of the subject to the surrounding community. Worcester is a city of immigrants, most of the students are first or second generation immigrants, and I saw them respond very powerfully when I brought in food, or interviews from the community. It made the content relevant, and not simply theoretical.

Evidence:

In this video I interview a local baker who makes a special day of the dead bread from Mexico. We not only ate the bread, we learned first hand how the bread is made from a local. This allowed for not only community engagement, but aural practice, and as a way of understanding how culture is all around us if we look for it, even at the Greendale Mall!
