But modern English readers are seldom aware that the Hebrew word for Moses\u2019s little vehicle\u2014rendered by virtually all modern versions as &#8220;basket&#8221;\u2014is a rare Egyptian loan word (<em>teiva<\/em>) meaning \u201cbox,\u201d and is in fact the very same word used in the earlier Flood story to describe Noah\u2019s famous vessel. The reader of the Hebrew is thus assured that Moses, like Noah before him, will be saved. I have tried to retain the connection between the two passages by rendering Moses\u2019s basket as \u201clittle-ark\u201d; the classic King James Version did likewise with \u201cark\u201d\u2014which derives from a Latin word meaning \u201cbox.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u00a0<a title=\"Principle 10\" href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/efox\/resources\/first-time-readers\/principle-10\/\">Principle 10 \u00bb<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Allusion: the wording of one passage echos the wording of another, indicating a connection between them.
