The New Shape of Sudan—and Sudanese Diaspora Studies

The final results of the 2011 referendum in Southern Sudan show that a vast majority of voters supported independence for the South rather than remaining part of Sudan.

The planned secession in July 2011 has implications not only for Sudanese in Sudan, but also for those in the Diaspora.

How should the Sudanese Diaspora Research Network acknowledge this transformation? Should we split the network along the lines of the new political border? Should we remain one network that accepts the historical interconnectedness of the peoples from Sudan (1956 – 2011)? Or are there other ways to organize the scholarship and research in this area of study?
