Pearson. |<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Excerpt<\/strong>: On June 5, two months of gathering\u00a0indigenous protest across the Peruvian\u00a0Amazon culminated in one of the country\u2019s\u00a0most tragic moments in many a year.\u00a0Several\u00a0thousand indigenous and non-indigenous people\u00a0had assembled in the Amazonas town of Bagua,\u00a0blocking the highway and demanding the derogation\u00a0of executive decrees on which they had not\u00a0been consulted and that they felt\u00a0threatened their future access to land,\u00a0and therefore their livelihoods, in the\u00a0territories they have long occupied.\u00a0Also gathered were police forces, sent\u00a0in by the central government to reopen\u00a0the highway. In a still unclear\u00a0sequence of events, shooting began.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the day, and though\u00a0numbers are still disputed, five\u00a0Awaj\u00fan-Wamp\u00eds indigenous people\u00a0and five mestizo townspeople were\u00a0confirmed dead, along with 23\u00a0policemen, 11 of whom were killed\u00a0in retaliation by indigenous people as they were\u00a0guarding a pumping station of the North Peruvian\u00a0Oil Pipeline. One hundred and sixty-nine indigenous\u00a0and mestizo civilians and 31 police were\u00a0confirmed injured. A report issued in July by the\u00a0national Ombudsman\u2019s office found that all the\u00a0indigenous people involved in the conflict had\u00a0been accounted for in the villages its representatives\u00a0had visited and that no formal complaints of\u00a0missing persons had been received. Indigenous\u00a0leaders, however, said that many more remote\u00a0villages had not been visited and that reliable figures\u00a0on the missing or killed would not be available\u00a0unless an independent commission were\u00a0created to investigate the events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>| By Anthony Bebbington | Published in NACLA Report on the Americas, 42(5) September\/October, pp. 12-20. | | Reprinted, 2013 in P.
