{"id":832,"date":"2016-08-08T14:20:18","date_gmt":"2016-08-08T14:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lyndonestes.princeton.edu\/?p=832"},"modified":"2020-02-02T15:44:51","modified_gmt":"2020-02-02T15:44:51","slug":"balancing-agriculture-and-conservation-in-african-savannas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/AIRG\/2016\/08\/08\/balancing-agriculture-and-conservation-in-african-savannas\/","title":{"rendered":"Balancing Agriculture and Conservation in African Savannas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-836 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wordpress.clarku.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/551\/2016\/08\/tradeoffmod-e1470666192895.png\" width=\"175\" height=\"160\"> My colleagues and I have a new paper (accessible <a href=\"http:\/\/rstb.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/371\/1703\/20150316\">here<\/a>)&nbsp;out today in the latest issue of <em>Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B<\/em>, the theme of which is &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/rstb.royalsocietypublishing.org\/content\/371\/1703\">Tropical Grassy Biomes: linking ecology, human use, and conservation<\/a>&#8220;, edited by Drs. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.ac.uk\/geosciences\/people?indv=3626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caroline Lehmann<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/funkyant.weebly.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catherine Parr<\/a> (a fellow <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitzpatrick.uct.ac.za\/fitz\/about\/introduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fitztitute<\/a> alum). Our paper uses a new land use tradeoff model that is designed to find optimal tradeoffs between agricultural expansion and environmental conservation in Zambia, a bellwether for agriculturally driven land use change in sub-Saharan Africa&#8217;s savannas (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/273721610_High_carbon_and_biodiversity_costs_from_converting_Africa%27s_wet_savannas_to_cropland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see our earlier paper<\/a> on this subject for more background). The model is designed to allow users with competing land use interests to evaluate the costs and benefits of compromise.
